In normal communication, nonverbal communication helps a lot. We use gestures, eye contact and some body language when speaking. In the US, when people talking, their eyes are on the person who is speaking or listening. However, in China, young peosple should not stare others eyes especially when talking to older. Because this behavior shows young people's respect. Such behavior makes Chinese easy to be shy when talking. In China, using finger to point to someone for a long time is a kind of rude behavior. In the US, these kinds of behavior is natural. Chinese people do not hug usually. Americans like "Give me five" which Chinese people never use.
On the contrary, there are some actions that both Chinese and American use such as shaking hands when meet. As everything goes international, in some formal situation, people's actions are the same in different countries. Noding heads means yes and sometimes means "hello". Smiling makes people move upward.
All in all, nonverbal communication is no long independent in a country. Body languages and eye contact spread all of the world. It is no more amazing that in a totally unfamiliar country, you can live as you live in homeland.
