Blog Assignment #5

In China, after every dynasty takes place of the former one, the first thing they must do is writing history. They would like to say they stand for justice and their behavior of dynasty change is fulfilling absolute decree. They describes former dynasty's administration management corrupt. That's why they overturn it. Because winner uses history to change people's minds so that to control them especially their thoughts. History belongs to culture. Controlling culture is the most important thing for a dynasty.
However, if the history is written by loser, what we learn nowadays would be totally different. For example, in "From Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee", if history is written by Indians, it would say how terriblely the Eroupen did to them. They would accuse invader of their behavior. Surely, what loser describe about history is not accurate, but it is in another differently angle. Of course, loser will emphasize their pity and innocence, and criminal actions of invaders. Indians will say how big they offered help to newcomings and would describes English as devil. Since historical events happened, people have no method to change it. Winner will erase their immoral activities while loser will concertrate on winner's immoral activities. And,emotions are different. Winner's history consists of happiness and proud while loser's history consists of antipathy and regret.

Nonverbal Communication

In normal communication, nonverbal communication helps a lot. We use gestures, eye contact and some body language when speaking. In the US, when people talking, their eyes are on the person who is speaking or listening. However, in China, young peosple should not stare others eyes especially when talking to older. Because this behavior shows young people's respect. Such behavior makes Chinese easy to be shy when talking. In China, using finger to point to someone for a long time is a kind of rude behavior. In the US, these kinds of behavior is natural. Chinese people do not hug usually. Americans like "Give me five" which Chinese people never use.
On the contrary, there are some actions that both Chinese and American use such as shaking hands when meet. As everything goes international, in some formal situation, people's actions are the same in different countries. Noding heads means yes and sometimes means "hello". Smiling makes people move upward.
All in all, nonverbal communication is no long independent in a country. Body languages and eye contact spread all of the world. It is no more amazing that in a totally unfamiliar country, you can live as you live in homeland.

Real me

First image of a stranger always provides people reasons determinating him what kind of people he is. So, people pay attention to their first images, especially for managers because they have a lot of meetings. As a student, to me, it is also very important because I stand not only for myself, but also for my homeland.
I prefer my first image to be modest, honest and friendly. As China's 5000 long history and culture, modesty has gone deeply into people's hearts. On the other hand, modesty makes me gentalman and can quickly shorten distance between stanger and me. Honesty shows my genuineness. When stranger sees your genuineness, it becomes easier to make friends with him. Friendly helps a lot. No one likes cool man who is hard to touch. Being friendly so that you will have a large group of friends who will help when you in trouble.
The goal is really head to reach. I try best to be modest, honest and friendly. However, there is no standard to judge how I do. I think it is not too far from real me. I like chatting with friends. Of course, sometimes I prefer staying alone. Receiving 20 years Chinese culture, I am modest and honest, but shy compared to American. I hope I will be what I portray to be.

Review of Mother Tongue

This post is to describe language differences between two generations and in formal and informal situation.
In China, where 5000 years' culture received deeply, use of language much differ between two generations. For me, I can use any words when talking to my friends. We young people prefer using fresh words which are created on the Internet and much newer. It is common that when we talk to our parents, our parents cannot understand what we say as the words they do not know. Besides, when I talk to my parents, I should show enough respect by culture. We are forbid actting like brother with parents.
When it comes to formal situation, I should use Putonghua. On top of that, I should not use imformal words from Internet. In formal situation, we also need to pay attention to our body language. On the other hand, we can use both formal language and informal language when having informal conversation.
